Would it be beneficial to examine the coins for rarity for someone that does not know much about coins, or just to cash them in. What are my chances of finding something of value. I have noticed many older coins from the 60’s.

YES, it would be worth examining them !! If nothing else, check the quarters… anything prior to 1965 will be SILVER instead of alloy and is worth more that 25 cents.

A few years ago I dumped out my 5 gallon water jar of change and found 42 SILVER quarters along with a number of buffalo nickels

Most sites are trying to sell you something and the ones that have information are usually not free. I started collecting coins 46 years ago and went to my friendly neighborhood coin dealer. There are still some around. See if you can find one near you. Buying and selling coins on the web can be a nightmare. I have just started to use Yahoo auctions and have found that I am not well treated. They either think I won’t pay and have a nasty ending to their you won email or refuse my bid for I am new at it and don’t have any buying rating. It sure sound un- American or illegal to me. There is nothing like talking to a dealer and actually seeing the coins not a photo. A dealer and be very helpful and most that have stores and have been around a few years are very honest. As for sport cards I collect basketball and only the players I like. The market kind of fell out of cards so it is best to just do it for fun. You should also take that attitude when collecting coins. I did and have done quite well even though I didn’t collect for profit. Good luck in your endeavor and if I can be of more help send me your email address and I will get back to you on any questions you have. Also try http://coins.about.com

It’s such a broad, huge field how do you know where to start?

Do you just pick a coin you like (I like Mercury Dimes and Morgan Dollars) for instance and go with it or what?

Thanks for the input.

Coin collecting is a very large field but you already like 2 types of coins that have a great following. Winged Liberty dimes (Mercury) are great coins that are also quite beautiful. I have 2 complete sets. Morgan silver dollars are a fun thing also. I knew that I would never be able to complete the set due to a few very expensive coins. I also did know that I could complete a date set, that is one of each date. I made sure I had all the mints included and also was lucky enough to get some of the scarce dates also. I have a nice set and work on making it better grade wise. I have collected for a long time so I have interests in most all coins. Right now I am working on ancient Asian coins. I buy the proof sets also and some were a good buy and others were not. As you get into coins and learn more you may want to buy books and study coins, do research, if or when that happens you will become a numismatist. It is a great hobby and one can even make a few buck by knowing more about a series than the dealers do but don’t let them know that. have fun

Since you must live in the UK you really need to see a few local dealers. That would be the best way to sell coins. Maybe some one from the UK can help with this answer. Most of the people answering coin questions live here in the states and are really not much help.
