Re: coin collecting, does anyone know how much it costs to get coins certified?

May 13, 2010 - 9:53 am 4 Comments

I started collecting about a year ago, and, by now, I see the value in having a certification number from one of the recognized grading services. Once that number is on the package the value goes up dramatically. Let’s say I have 30 coins that I want certified by the NGC or PGCS, how much would something like that cost one (approx) ?

it depends on the value of the coins. Not all coins graded by PCGS or NGC go up in value when graded, low end Mint State coins are still cheap even in slabs. Dealers can’t sell them for much, graded or not. Some people buy slabbed coins on eBay and pay way to much, in the end they will lose money when the sell. See a coin dealer for values on sending them in. You must belong to them or some dealer who does has to send them in for you. You will find the slab is not really greener on the other side in a lot of cases. See a coin dealer. Only rare circulated coins should be graded and to make sure they are real for common ones will have little value slabbed or not.

I’ve just started Coin Collecting and would like to buy from a place that won’t sell me junk!

Hi Paul,
I’m in Australia, but try eBay. I’ve looked for and bought just about everything else from there. Good luck, Lisa

Coin Collecting need some basic info and where to start ?

May 8, 2010 - 2:45 pm 7 Comments

I am looking at collecting coins and would like to learn more about it. I love history and I think this maybe something I would enjoy and that might actually be worth my time both as for fun and as a kind of investment. What are some good ways to learn about coin collecting and things like what to look for and look out for, also how expensive is it as a rule. Thanks so much!

There are two major types of US coin collections. You could collect US proofs, US mint coins, or both. Most people collect mint coins, but I collect proofs. I only collect PCGS and NGC graded coins. These are coins that have been sent into a grading company who will grade and slab your coin, for a price of course. There are many sites like Ebay, Heritage, or Teletrades that hold auction almost daily with huge inventories. Coin collecting is great fun and very time consuming, and can be very profitable if done right. Like any investment it take time and years of learning. I started out knowing nothing, you just have to do your research. One book that helped me with proofs was Rick Tomaska’s
" Cameo and Brilliant Proof Coinage of the 1950 to 1970 era". There are a ton of books out there, but you might want to start with that one. He is also coming out with an encyclopedia as well. Good Luck!!!

How do I start ancient coin collecting?

May 6, 2010 - 4:24 am 5 Comments

I’d like to start coin collecting, since I’ve sorta started "by accident". How is the best way to collect some inexpensive ancient coins? Anyone out there got any suggestions for a newbie? :)

I’ve been collecting ancients for about 2 years now. I mostly buy "crusties" (uncleaned coins that I soak in distilled water and clean up myself). These are inexpensive, but you never know what you will get. I avoid e-bay unless I know the seller. ANY EBAY SELLER ADVERTISING "GOLD COINS FOUND" IS A FRAUD. There are several reputable dealers, among them Noble Roman Coins, that I deal with regularly. Also, "Buy the book before you buy the coin" is very good advice. Might I suggest "The Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins" by David Van Meter as a great first book. Usually around $30 on e-bay. Lots of pictures, lots of history, and lots of attribution. Another suggestion, ww.nobleromancoins.com has a free DVD download on "The Art of Cleaning Ancient Coins". Also, there are many good ancient coin groups on Yahoo. Join a couple and "lurk" for a while. I guarantee this "addiction" (intense hobby) is fun and enjoyable. Good Luck!!

coin collecting?

I was looking at coin values and i noticed that depending on the coin its usually worth more if its made in San Fransico.Does anyone know why this is?

Actually…the mint marks are important…but CC Carson City is the most desirable mint mark. As for "S" mark…less coins are usually minted in San Francisco…look at the total amount of coins struck and usually San Fran is much less then "P" Philadelphia and "D" Denver. Tagger
