Calgary Gardeners are a passionate breed of people.

Due to the quick blast of spring summer and fall, we only have a small amount of time to enjoy our gardens in Calgary. Because of this, I like to make the most out of the gardening season.

Calgary is know more long, but mild winters, so one should pay attention to the ambitions and plan for your garden. Reflection is what winter time is for.

Spring is a time to enjoy your Calgary Garden.

The warm smell of lilacs permeating many Calgary Gardens on a nice spring day is what I look forward to every year. A passing bee loves to stop from flower to flower collecting nectar from a favorite Calgary garden.

It is amazing how a gardener in Calgary can plant only a few plants to achieve vibrancy and vitality.

Your dog suddenly has more energy as he scrambles to get outside to the garden area, on a typical spring day Calgary.

Calgary has a growing season of about four to five months. When winter hits, Calgary and city gardeners are used to a phenomenon called a Chinook.

Chinooks are good in the sense they save the people of Calgary really cold winters, but they are bad for Calgary Gardens. Plants in a typical Calgary Garden will get tricked into thinking that it is summer before being hit by really cold spells. This can be no good for plants in any Calgary Garden.

Calgary Chinooks pose another problem for gardens. The wind. Due to the pressure variance associated with Calgary Chinooks, high winds can dry out plants in your gardens.

A popular Calgary Garden plant called the Cedar is one plant that should watched during Calgary winters, to make sure it doesn’t dry out.

After the winter season in Calgary, spring arrives and gardens rejoice with life.

It has many configurations which very much is determined by the design and cost. But primarily, regardless of your design, you need the aerator, the pump, and the koi pond filter.

You can install this filters in different places in your fish shoal, so it wouldn’t be a problem with regards to preferences. You can place them within the garden or outside.

However you have to choose your devices wisely because each has their own advantages and restrictions.

One basic type of the koi pond filter is the basket filter. Depending on the design that you choose, you can place this underwater or at the pond surface. Pond filters work in a way when it forces the water through a net so it can capture big debris. After the filter do this, the water is recycled back to the pond.

These filters are a basic necessity for any pond. Comes in many types, all of them are capable of removing debris of different sizes. But the basket needs to be cleaned from time to time to avoid clogging. Do this according to the given schedule of your filter device provider.

In case you didn’t know, when water is exposed to the UV rays of the sunlight, microorganisms and algae are killed. The pond filter can do this. You have to clean this filter every once in while though, for some grime smudges the UV housing bulb. You want the most amount of UV light in the water and you really have to clean it.

You might notice small amounts of water that goes to the pump. This can be a nice complement for your garden pond, but it still lacks the ability to handle great quantities of water, sufficient, mainly for pond water safety.

The bacterial garden filter on the hand is another type. That is, if you want to use healthy live organisms to purify the water from some algae. You do know that your pond dwellers and fish are all prey from these algae, and you certainly want to disinfect your water from these organisms.

But you have to prime the pump. Seek the supplier’s instructions on how to prime the device. Usually it is re-primed on your first week of use, and in for intervals that follow.

Pollutants like “pond scum” and those unwanted algae never survive in water if you have bacterial filter in your pond. When you decide to switch to a particulate pond filter (basket filter), good possible results follows. You should try it.

The use of bacterial filter might take some time, from weeks to months, just to clean the squalid and dirty water of your pond. So you really have to install the garden pond filters at the onset of algae problems, a real mess, more so when plants starts to grow.

The results of your garden pond’s filtration has a direct effect on the volume of the pond water. So just become aware on how you will handle these.

An additional reminder would be to not cut the corners of the spot where you will put the pond devices. This is not a nice idea. Try to think of another spot.

These devices should also be able to filter at least half of the volume of water per hour. This is a standard but not a requirement.

Foresee the situation where you have to spend a little more money just to have an effective filtration technology. This is just a little sacrifice and it could go a long way.

Having an effective filtration technology, do lets your fish thrive in such a perfect garden pond habitat. And this is the only thing that a that a gardener should want.

You could do it on your own or call a professional. Either way, you know you have to do something about it.

Well, the first thing you should do is call a professional, or start planning yourself.

From our experience, we have been Landscaping in Calgary for 10 years, there are a few elements to each Calgary Landscape Design that are extremely important.

Knowing what style to go with is your first priority.

First things first. You have to understand that people here usually go for the naturalistic style to complement the rocky mountain backdrop of Calgary.

The best way to achieve this for your Calgary Landscape is in a few ways.

Foundational elements would be on top of your list. Consider all the hardscapes which include the retaining walls, decks and patios, fences and gardens, gazebos and the fountain!

Patios can either be a bunch of stone or a work of art. We try to compliment the landscape with our patios so that they flow and add to the existing local, Calgary surroundings.

Take a look at the local surroundings of Calgary and use it as your inspiration. Natural stones or manufactured bricks are some of the common materials you should use. You’ll never go wrong with that.

The Landscape brick we use is from a company called expocrete and is local to Calgary. They have a really good product that they stand by and last.

The natural stone we use is found about 4 hours away from Calgary in a town called Kimberly and is a super good browny, coppery beige color that compliments almost any landscape.

Retaining walls are built out of the same materials as well. It doesn’t matter if you want a natural retaining wall or if you want a man made brick retaining wall.

Spring season is the best time to turn your garden into a colorful work of art. Plant flowers and/or vegetables that would suit your landscaping design best.

Your Calgary Landscape project is a combination of all these elements.

What I love the most about Calgary Landscapes are the decorative accents that have gained more and more popularity these days. I’m talking about the ponds, waterfalls, lighting and such other elements. They add the sparkle and vivacity to the gardens.

A water pond can definitely draw in wildlife and species. It can develop into a natural biosphere, your garden transforming into a shelter for bees, butterflies and grasshoppers.

Basically, you can help revive balance in the environ when you create a water pond in your garden. The macrocasm needs all help with global warming drying up the mud flats. A lagoon in your garden rejuvenates the habitat.

1.What’s the pond size?

Consider the pond size. A mini pond would flourish just as a huge pond and even with a dustbin lid, don’t get bogged down with the size.

Just create a pond in proportion with the garden. A small pond would look adrift with a big garden. A big lagoon would overshadow a small lawn.

2.Choose a style

It would be important to decide the type of pond that you will create. Once the pond is in place, it’s difficult to make changes, so it’s important to decide on where you’re going to dig.

Find the style of pond that would complement to your garden. A traditional garden would look great with a natural pond.

3.The site of your pond

Don’t settle the pond when you’ve found a vacant lot in your garden. You don’t just place a lagoon in the middle of an area where your tots would play ball!

Situate a nice site where everyone can enjoy. Visualize the spot where you will place it.

4.Far from trees

Try to place your nature pond away from the trees. Trees that shed leaves often silt your pond. As much you’d like your pond to remain as a water pond, not a puddle of mud.

Also, photosynthesis is important for water plants and you don’t want them being shielded from the sunlight with the shade of trees.

5.Different depths

Have different depths in your pond with broad shallow waters and deeper spots.

Shallow water surfaces warms up faster which lets micro-algae grow as feeds for the tiny creatures. In the cold season, try to have water in the deep areas, this becomes a shelter for your pond inhabitants.

6.Shelves and slopes

Create shelves to support the baskets of marginals and other aquatic plants. Make sure it is at least 6 to 12 inches below the water surface. Have some water lilies and oxygenating plants in deeper spots in your pond.

In addition, create gentle slopes at the water’s edge. This will allow aquatic creatures to access the other areas in the pond.

7.Use pond liners

It would be nice to build a pond from puddled clay, but let me you the maintenance is not that easy. It constantly cracks and I’m sure your cats and dogs would add to this trouble.

It would be much better if you can use a modern pond liner. You can use an UPDM rubber, which can be shaped and folded to your liking.

8.Install pumps

You don’t need a rising jet type of fountain or a Neptune sculpture with a water pump. A small water pump is a good addition nonetheless for your pond.

The consistent movement generated by the pump improves water rotation and boosts the distribution of air.

Now that the marginals has bloomed, what’s your next action?

Keep it clean by removing the gunk and leaves. It took you time to build a a natural Calgary Pond and this is the best way to keep it for years.

By any means, take care of the species when they took shelter at your pond!
