What was the lifestyle of a wealthy young woman in the 1930s?

May 31, 2010 - 4:20 pm 1 Comment

Imagine a young woman, around age 18, from a wealthy WASP family in the 1930s. Her family has been essentially uneffected by the stock market crash. What would she do with her time untill she married? Would she go to college, get a job? Volunteer? Thanks!

i work in a museum and i would say they became school teachers and or they went to school and that they enjoyed the fashions of their time.

What school supplies were needed for wealthy boys’ academies in America in the 1880s?

May 29, 2010 - 1:21 am 1 Comment

I’m writing a story and my boys are getting ready to go back to school for the fall session. They are wealthy enough to be taking Latin and the other higher subjects, so what school supplies would they need? Also, how would the school classrooms be set up? Would they be like a lecture hall or more like modern classrooms with older desks?

lot of supplies a and a lecture hall

How do wealthy people and groups attempt to influence elected officials today?

May 26, 2010 - 12:36 pm 4 Comments

How do wealthy people and groups attempt to influence elected officials today? What can ordinary citizens do about it?

1. Form aggressive PACs and NGOs to support their candidates and belittle their opponents
2. Control of information and information dissemination by their own mass media outlets. Blitz news cycle with pundits, talking heads, and policy wonks.
3. Censorship of media through economic boycott or advertising revenue deprivation
4. Direct and soft money payments to candidates and their political parties
5. Whisper/black mail campaigns
6. Lobbying groups advocate in sympathy or contrary to positions advocated by elected officials
7. Low interest loans and sweetheart real estate deals for favored candidates and officials
8. Direct huge sums of money towards projects favored by chosen candidates and away from disfavored candidates
9. Manipulate and tinker with credit, stock, and other financial markets during critical times of election campaigns
10. File lawsuits against unpopular candidates to bankrupt them.

Will the wealthy fire people in their business if their taxes go up?

May 23, 2010 - 5:29 am 5 Comments

We always think of the wealthy as fat cats who are lone operators. Taking some money from them to pay for health care, services, budget deficits seems like a great thing to do. Most people who are wealthy, even actors and musicians employee a good number of people. If they have to pay more in taxes will they lay people off and/or put off hiring new people?

Right on the money! Wealthy people are already leaving high tax states. In many cases when they go, so do the jobs. There is no data to support the notion that they hired replacements elsewhere.

You see, the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.

How can wealthy people claim they’re environmentally friendly when they consume so much?

May 20, 2010 - 8:48 am 12 Comments

It puzzles me how celebrities and wealthy people can claim they’re environmentally friensdly simply by driving hybrids or wearing organic clothing, when they live in big houses which require energy to build and maintain them, take lots of flights, own lots of clothes they don’t need, and own several cars instead of just one. Isn’t being wealthy and conspicuous consumption inherantly environmentally unfriendly?

I must agree that for many of the Celebs it is more of a marketing ploy than a real lifestyle choice. However, there is an increasing number of people with money who are willing to really make a difference.

Larry Hagman, (from I dream of Jeannie and Dallas fame) has a very eco friendly home, he has a huge solar array which feeds enough back into the grid to supply energy for a couple other homes, he has worked it out with the utility company to give the extra to low income families.

That is just one example, many others are doing the right thing. I think we need to learn how to consume less energy and other resources without giving up our lifestyle. If a person becomes aware of how their spending impacts the environment they are more likely to reduce their impact by purchasing less and when they do buy, they will look for a sustainable solution. For those that are doing it for PR, who cares they were going to buy things any way, at least they are buying sustainable things this time.

Are Republicans the party of the wealthy, and Democrats the party of criminals?

May 16, 2010 - 5:24 pm 9 Comments

And there is significant overlap, because many of the wealthy are also criminals (such as Madoff).

Is this why there seems to be so much similarity between the parties, in terms of indifference or outright animosity toward the honest workers in the middle class?

Besides the wealthy criminals, the Republicans also represent the honest wealthy, which is about 5% of the population.

The Democrats also represent the criminals who are not wealthy, including the lazy parasites in the middle class and the poor. These groups seem to account for about 30-40% of the population.

Is this why Democrats seem to poll more favorably than Republicans?

Democrats are the party of wealthy criminals.
