What is the minimum number of coins that could have been in the trunk?

May 31, 2010 - 4:20 pm 2 Comments

Five pirates raid the ship of a wealthy bureaucrat and steal his trunk of gold pieces. By the time they get the trunk aboard, dusk has fallen, so they agree to split the gold the next morning.
But the pirates are all very greedy. During the night one of the pirates decides to take some of the gold pieces for himself. He sneaks to the trunk and divides the gold pieces into five equal piles, with one gold piece left over. He puts the gold piece in his pile, hides it, puts the other four piles back in the trunk, and sneaks back to bed.One by one, the remaining pirates do the same. They sneak to the trunk, divide the coins into five piles, with always one coin left over. Each pirate puts the gold coin in his own pile, hides it, and puts the remaining four piles back in the trunk.

Please simplify and show work.

Unfastened Coins: Titanic Conspiracy

May 29, 2010 - 2:22 pm 25 Comments

From http://maddox.xmission.com I created this video to uncover the truth about the cover up of the sinking of the Titanic. How could a ship that’s made out of metal be sunk by an iceberg? If icebergs are so tough, why don’t people use them to build ships instead of metal?

What is the probability that 10 coins selected randomly from 100 coins add up to $1?

May 29, 2010 - 1:21 am 11 Comments

Assume the 100 coins consist randomly of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Each coin has an equal probability of being selected.
Just as a side note, I got the idea for this question at toll booth. So I suppose this does have some type of real-world application.

There are several ways to make $1 out of 10 coins:
A
quaters: 3
dimes 2
penies 5
B
quateres 2
dimes 2
nickels 6
C
quaters 1
dimes 6
nickels 3
D
qaters 0
nickels 10

The number of ways to construct selections is
nA: 10!/(3!2!5!) = 2520
nB: 10!/2!2!6! = 1260
nC: 10!/1!6!3! = 840
nD: 10!/10! = 1

Total volume of desirable configuration space is
nA+nB+nC+nD = 4621 out of
volume of entire configuration space 4^10

Answer:
4621/4^10 = 0.440 692 901 611 328 125 %
(decimal fraction above is exact)

How do you ship coins the correct way for a coin collector?

May 26, 2010 - 12:36 pm 1 Comment

I’m curios, If someone is to send 25 coins, loose, unwrapped by U.S.P.S. What is the correct way to prepare for shipping?

I wrap each coin in it’s own piece of paper.
Be careful, don’t let the tape touch the coin, collectors hate that! Then pack them snug with peanuts or wadded newspapers so that they don’t bang into each other.

What are the odds of thowing up three coins in the air and having them land stacked on their edges?

May 23, 2010 - 5:29 am 2 Comments

Three coins stacked on each other’s edge, what are the odds of this happening in a 3 coin flip? Throw up three coins into the air, they come down, they bounce and come to rest not just on their edges but stacked on their edges.
The coins would have to be well made and capable of balancing in such a way.

Well, they say nothing is impossible so I would say maybe once in your entire life time if you live to be at least 157 years!!!.

May 20, 2010 - 9:41 am 25 Comments

Bison Nickels, War Nickels, Buffalo Nickels, Liberty Nickels and my 1860 half dime.
As a side note, in the video i said there were 5 nickels belonging to the Lewis & Clark series. However there is actually 4 as the “Smiling Jefferson” also known as the “Monticello” is not part of the set. The 4 that are part of the set include The Bison, The Peace Medal (the one i called the hammer for some reason :o P ), The Keelboat, and finally the Ocean in view.
If anyone has any questions about these coins or any other coins in the U.S. than just ask. No foreign coin questions as i probally will not have an answer for you.

Is it ok to change the coins into dollar bills in any banks for free?

May 20, 2010 - 8:48 am 5 Comments

I’m curious about if any bank can accept to change coins into dollar bills for free. I made $42 in cents and want to change my coins into dollar bills for free. I already did filled all my coins into the coin wrapper or tubes. I don’t want to put all my coins into the coins changer green machine in any grocery stores because I have to pay to the cashier register after I got my own receipt from the green machine to get the money. I want to go to Chase Bank, but do Chase can accept to coins into dollar bills for free? Any ideas? If not, tell me any banks can accept to change the coins into dollar bills for free?

Most banks will for free if you have an account there.

How does a vending machine distinguish between coins so quickly?

May 16, 2010 - 5:24 pm 2 Comments

What kind of method do machines that take coins to tell which coin it’s getting? And what does it have that prevents people from using 2 x 5 cent coins stuck together as a trick for a $2 coin (australian currency) – Or.. How can it tell?

There is a little man inside that checks them. To David…..are you really that hard up for points that you don’t feel the need to actually answer the questions?
