How can atheists deny that Herod and Pontius Pilate existed when there is numismatic evidence ?

I have seen coins that were issued by them during there reign. They are called Leptons or Prutahs (small copper coins). If you acknowledge they may have existed, why not God/Jesus.

atheists deny anything they cant touch or see…Christians deny non-believers…i find it amazing how much non-believers know about the bible..its as if they either are christian wanna-be’s…or they read it ti bash Christians..why else would they read the bible..

Assuming such coins exist, it’s because there are no similar artifacts proving the existence of Jesus or god.

Many real characters make appearances in works of fiction. We should take that as proof of their existence?

i don’t deny they may have existed. i also don’t deny a person named jesus may have existed. but that certainly doesn’t mean he was a manifestation of a deity.

proof that some of the bible is true doesn’t mean all of it is true. just because a movie is set in new york and tells the story of a person who was real doesn’t mean everything in the movie actually happened.

There is, as you say, numismatic evidence for the two gentlemen to whom you refer. But an interesting lack of verifiable contemporary evidence for Jesus of Nazareth. The earliest we have for him appeared decades after his alleged death.

Well, I’ve seen European coins with phoenixes on them, but that doesn’t mean they were real…

Just because the Wizard of Oz mentions the state of Kansas doesn’t prove the story is true

Because I don’t have any coins that were issued by God. When He starts His own system of currency, then it’ll be a different story. In any event, evidence of certain Roman officials which were referred to in the Bible does not mean that every other factual statement contained in the Bible is therefore correct.

"Gone With The Wind" describes the confederacy. Bills printed by the confederate states of America exist to this day. Some of them have Jefferson Davis’s picture on it–I do believe Jefferson Davis existed. What you suggest, however, is because of that fact–we should believe thta Scarlett O’Hara, Rhett Butler, Prissy, and Mammy were real live individuals and that GWTW was a biography/historical document.

Your attempt at logic has failed. There are numerous writen records for Pontius Pilate, however there are none for Jesus other than the bible.

    Nice try but you fail

Herod and Pilate are historical figures. Their existence does not in any way whatsoever lend credence to the story of God or Jesus. In fact, knowing that these men did exist, one would think there would be some sort of documentation among their artifacts and records of the man called Jesus who they supposedly hated so much. Yet there isn’t.

I have no doubt that a man named Jesus lived 2,000 years ago who led a band of disparate Jews to strive against the Pharisean dogma of the day and lead their lives based on love and peace. But there is no documentation to support the idea that such a man was a pivotal historical figure who caused such a disturbance that he was arrested and crucified….let alone resurrected.

I’ve never heard any atheist denying that either existed. There’s good records for both. There’s no record of Herod’s infanticide though, nor is their record of a census at the correct time and place as described in the bible.

They existed. it doesn’t mean that Jesus existed. If you are claiming that since known historical personages which have evidence proving their existence means that your mythological character which has only dubious evidence of having existed then your method is severely flawed.

Because we also have a paper trail for those people from the time they were alive.

The first written accounts of someone called Jesus didn’t show up until some 30+ years after his supposed death — plenty of time for people to forget the facts of what really happened, or to make up a story from wholecloth.

Incidentally– are you also suggesting that there are eagles flying around on the Moon, as the 1969 silver dollar coins depict? Or that there is a real "Lady Liberty", as American coins from the 1930’s often show? How about pyramids with a giant eyeball on top?

I never denied their existence. They were real people but you have to remember the bible was written a long time after the events in were said to have taken place. They were most likely tossed in because they were political figures at the time of Jesus’s death.

Also it could be that Jesus was just a normal human who thought he was the son of god and he was indeed killed by Pontius Pilate because he claimed to be royalty because he said he was the son of god and king of the Jews. The execution style that is described in the bible is one the Romans saved for people who claimed to be royalty.

Really this is not a good enough claim to say that the bible is true.

There is physical evidence that Troy also existed so does that prove the existence of Athena, Hera and Aphrodite? By your logic it does. You had better start worshiping them otherwise they get awfully cranky

There is historical evidence for plantations in the American south keeping slaves into the late 1800s. Georgia, and even Atlanta, certainly existed during the civil war, and there is even solid historical and archaeological evidence that it burned.

That doesn’t mean that I think Scarlett O’Hara is a real person.
